Theodore Roosevelt National Park is the place I would put at the top of a first North Dakota itinerary. The landscape is unexpectedly dramatic: layered badlands, open prairie, winding rivers and wildlife beneath an enormous sky.
Three different units
The park is divided into separate areas, with the South Unit near Medora and the North Unit farther north attracting most visitors. The remote Elkhorn Ranch Unit adds another connection to Theodore Roosevelt’s time in Dakota Territory.
Watch for wildlife
Bison are one of the great sights here, alongside prairie dogs, deer and other wildlife. Keep a safe distance and never treat a roadside animal as an invitation to approach.
Drive and walk
Scenic roads provide an excellent introduction, but stop and hike if time allows. Even a short trail changes your perspective once the car disappears behind you.
Check conditions
Road closures, construction, weather and trail conditions can affect plans. Check current National Park Service information before visiting.
I would give the park at least a full day and preferably longer. North Dakota rewards travellers who accept distance and silence rather than trying to eliminate them.
