Explore spectacular badlands, historic towns, fascinating museums and the natural beauty of the northern Great Plains.
North Dakota is a destination that rewards curious travellers. While it may not have the same number of famous landmarks as some neighbouring states, it offers beautiful landscapes, fascinating history and plenty of opportunities for outdoor adventures.
Here are some experiences I would include when planning a visit.
Explore Theodore Roosevelt National Park
Theodore Roosevelt National Park is one of North Dakota’s most memorable attractions.
The park protects a spectacular landscape of colourful badlands, rolling hills and open grasslands.
Drive through the South Unit near Medora, explore the hiking trails and watch for wildlife such as bison, wild horses and prairie dogs.
If you have time, the quieter North Unit offers additional scenic viewpoints and hiking opportunities.
Discover Historic Medora
The small town of Medora is a popular gateway to Theodore Roosevelt National Park.
Its western atmosphere, historic buildings and seasonal entertainment make it a pleasant place to spend a day or two.
During the summer, the Medora Musical is a well-known outdoor performance celebrating the region’s history and culture.
Visit Fargo
Fargo offers a different side of North Dakota, with museums, restaurants, independent shops and a lively downtown area.
Visit the Plains Art Museum or explore the Fargo-Moorhead area’s cultural attractions.
If you enjoy discovering local food and drink, the city has plenty of interesting places to explore.
Experience North Dakota’s History
In Bismarck, the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum offers an introduction to the state’s natural and cultural history.
You can also visit Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park near Mandan, where reconstructed historic buildings and interpretive exhibits tell stories about the region’s past.
Enjoy the Great Outdoors
North Dakota offers excellent opportunities for hiking, fishing, camping and wildlife watching.
Lake Sakakawea is particularly popular for boating and fishing, while the state’s scenic highways make road trips an enjoyable way to discover its smaller communities.
My advice is to allow enough time for the journey itself. Some of North Dakota’s most memorable experiences are found between its better-known attractions.
